<image:title>Numerous ruins of churches (here Santa Teresa church), convents, and monasteries are witnesses of desatrous earthquakes, especially the Santa Marta earthquake in July 1773 (whose destructive force led to the decision to relocate the capital) and the strong earthquake in February 1976. These ruins, meticuously stabilized, are also witnesses of an ongoing effort to preserve Antigua Guatemala.</image:title>

The cathedral is shown on the left, the palace of the captaincy in the back, stores on the right hand side, and the volcanoes Agua and Fuego in the background. Note that the plaza was a bare place (unlike today's main plaza landscaped with trees and flower beds, and numerous benches) offering plenty of space for the market.</image:title>

<image:title>The complex of Godman's Mountain Pitviper (Cerrophidion godmani s.l.) is widespread in the highlands from Mexico to Panama. Recent phylogenetic analyses revealed cryptic species thoughout the range of this species complex, resulting in the descritpon of two new species (Jadin et al. 2012). Hence, Godman's Mountain Pitviper (Cerrophidion godmani s.s.) is endemic to southern Mexico and Guatemala. This individual is unusually orangish.</image:title>

Male orchid bees (Euglossini) have enlarged tibia of the hind legs, which harbor pockets for storing highly fragrant substances. These are collected during visits to specific orchid flowers but also on the surface of rotten wood and feces. After further processing these substances and concentrating the fragrance, males release those during territorial hover flights to attract females. <image:title>The first Nearctic fall migrant birds can be seen in Guatemala in July and August, including Louisiana Waterthrush, Black-and-white Warbler, and Hammond's Flycatcher … but the big waves of tens of thousands of migratory songbirds hit Guatemala until the end of September/October, usually together with the first northern cold fronts. While North American forests become quieter during this time because of the departure of the avian migrants, Guatemalan forests get a boost by the arrival of these birds. The rainy season has turned the forests around Antigua Guatemala in lush green habitats full of arthropods and fruit, providing food for both resident and visiting birds. Again the tchik-calls of MacGillivray's Warbler (Geothlypis tolmiei) – here a male – can be heard in the dense, shrubby understory of the forests around Antigua Guatemala.</image:title>

In some areas you may hear the liquid chuk-call of 3-5 birds at the same time at any given point in the forest. This is the time of high-peak spring migration of these thrushes in Guatemala, when countless birds pass through the country on their way from their wintering grounds in southern Central America and northern South America to their breeding grounds in North America.</image:title>

<image:title>White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) occurs in Guatemala mainly in the humid Atlantic slope lowlands below 700 m. During the northern winter, this hummingbird occurs also as rare visitor to the Pacific slope lowlands, indicating some kind of short-distance migration (Eisermann & Avendaño 2018). This immature male near Antigua Guatemala at 1800 m represents an unusual high-altitude record.</image:title>
